Executive Summary

The role of Corporate Communications Manager is a key role within the UK subsidiary of the L’Oreal Group, the world’s number one beauty company. Based in the corporate communications team this role is responsible for devising and implementing a cohesive and proactive media and stakeholder communications strategy in the UK that supports business objectives.

The Corporate Communications Manager will join an in-house team of four and, in addition, work closely with brand communications, marketing and scientific teams across the business to generate significant positive coverage for L’Oreal UK.

The position reports to the Senior Corporate Communications Manager and ultimately to the UK Vice-Chairman, with a dotted line to Group Corporate Communications function based in Paris.

Based in the Hammersmith HQ of the Paris listed company, the role demands a high level of leadership and interpersonal skills, considerable media relations and corporate communications experience and organisational agility.

Purpose of your new role

The role will focus on working within a team to promote the Group’s activities, values and financial results through impactful media relations and internal communications as required. The role is a fundamental part in the team’s remit to protect corporate reputation through anticipation and effective management of issues; communicate L’Oréal as a world-class employer and manage projects which include the company’s flagship philanthropic programme – L’Oreal For Women in Science programme in association with UNESCO and The Royal Institution of Great Britain (RI).

Your key job accountabilities

Media relations

- Create proactive media relations strategy and sell-in stories to generate high-quality coverage that reflect the UK and Group corporate messages, values and identity.

- Project management in conjunction with external agency and functional budget.

- Review press office systems and tools for maximum efficiency and impact. This includes the management of the press monitoring service, intelligence gathering and quarterly media evaluation.

- Plan and prepare all necessary documents for media briefings.

- Assist in selecting and training spokespeople to support the stories / initiatives being promoted.

- Produce corporate literature for L’Oreal (UK)

- Work closely with internal communications stakeholders and consider internal audiences in all work undertaken

- Ensure the news and press office function of www.loreal.co.uk corporate web site is up-to-date at all times (actual technical and overall management of the website will be handled by Internal and On-line Communications Officer).

CSR project management

Manage day-to-day running of projects such as the L’Oreal UK for Women in Science programme in partnership with Unesco and the RI – the company’s flagship philanthropic programme. This includes all external communications as well as logistical planning and relationship coordination with the key partners, e.g. the Jury members’ input into the programme, the organisation of the awards ceremony, announcements to UK academic establishments of the fellowship bursaries etc.

Issues management

Support the Senior Communications Manager and Director in handling reactive media queries, preparation of statements, Q&As etc. Together, you will work alongside the Vice-Chairman, the UK business and International head office on crisis communication (preparedness, monitoring, response, media training etc.).

Budgetary control

The role will have responsibility for effective management of the media relations and CSR budgets, keeping in regular contact with Finance controllers and reporting to the Senior Corporate Communcations Manager.

Qualifications / skills required

  • Educated to degree level
  • Expertise equivalent to 4-7 years communications experience, ideally gained in a leading agency (specialising in corporate, marketing communications or financial communication) and/or in-house at a global company
  • Strong demonstrable track record of front line media relations experience
  • Expert knowledge of broadcast, print and online media, ideally within pan-European context
  • Excellent communication (written and spoken), negotiation and presentational skills
  • Strategic thinker with ability to move effortlessly between strategy, implementation and tactical opportunities
  • Ability to rapidly digest and distil complex issues and formulate strategy / responses
  • Ability to establish, exploit and influence effective networks at all levels
  • Confident, persuasive individual who is at ease with both senior management and external stakeholders
  • Great team player with positive and enthusiastic approach
