About the role

The aim of the press office is to shift the perception of BSI and gain positive press coverage in newspapers, magazines, online and trade publications as well as on television and radio.  

The role of the PR Executive is vital to the press office and is needed in order to actively achieve this aim.  They will be required to get positive press coverage for BSI with a core focus on the promotion of Standards and the benefits they bring to organizations, primarily in the trade and online media.

Essential Requirements

  • Undertaking proactive media relations for BSI – building media contacts, handling media enquiries, suggesting media relations activities and news stories, and developing other media materials as part of the overall communications strategy to ensure a proactive approach to media relations within the UK
  • Write press releases on new ‘prioritised’ standards and other newsworthy issues in line with the PR strategy
  • Strong media sell-in skills - able to brief journalists on information about specific aspects of BSI products and campaigns
  • Establish strong working relationships with the BSI team across the UK to identify and develop news stories for the media and stakeholder communications
  • Identify and manage feature opportunities in the trade media for BSI
  • Highlight Standards that can be leveraged with the national media to the Global PR manager
  • Monitor the media, including magazines, journals, broadcast and blogs for opportunities for BSI
  • Editing and writing of features, articles, whitepapers and case studies for print and web-based media
  • Arrange interviews with spokespeople and the media, providing clear briefings and messaging we want communicated, and attending the interview
  • Manage effective working relationships with key external business contacts namely journalists and bloggers.  Build relationships and networking when needed
  • Manage and help develop creative content for the website
  • Collate, analyse and evaluate media coverage
  • Identify key speaking opportunities for our experts
  • Other PR duties as may be required from time to time

Candidate Spec

At least 1-2 years PR related experience with strong media relations skills

  • Degree level or equivalent preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Competent social media skills
  • A passionate interest in PR
  • Able to make complex issues easy to understand and interesting
  • Motivated individual – both personally and the ability to motivate others
  • Proactive approach to solving problems
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain networks of contacts both internally and externally
  • Manage multiple projects and competing priorities, and meet deadlines
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Strong team player
