Are you a skilled media officer who can handle national stories for a high-profile organisation?
If so, you could play an important role in the independent regulator that makes sure health and care services meet standards: the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Our job is to make sure that care provided by hospitals, dentists, ambulances, care homes and services in people’s own homes and elsewhere meet national standards of quality and safety. We regulate the services of some 22,000 health and social care providers.
About the role
As a member of our media team, you will help explain and promote our role. This will involve responding to tight deadlines, building relationships with a wide range of media outlets, preparing well-written materials including press releases, reactive statements and internal briefings. Day-to-day you’ll be responding to media queries, arranging interviews and helping to launch our reports. You’ll also be expected to join an out-of-hours rota, to ensure a 24/7 media office service. This calls for a calm response to highly pressured and time-sensitive situations, as well as a firm grasp of how we work.
Perhaps you have worked for the NHS or a local authority. Alternatively, you could be with another regulator. Whatever your background, you will be an experienced press officer with a good knowledge of health and social care. You will be used to handling high-profile national stories and crisis management; dealing with the media on a daily basis. This calls for excellent communication skills including the ability to build relationships, manage stakeholders and handle a wide range of contacts, right up to Board level. Ideally you will have a journalism or media-related qualification. You’ll certainly have excellent writing skills plus knowledge of standard IT. Decisive, organised and determined, you’ll be prepared to give expert advice and take responsibility for specialist subject areas.
