Media & PR Manager - Life Sciences

POSITION TITLE: MEDIA & PR MANAGER – LIFE SCIENCES

Purpose of role
As Media and PR Manager – Life sciences you will provide global media and PR coverage for the Life Sciences market for London, encouraging as many businesses as possible to come and invest in London and helping London businesses to export. You will develop strategic relationships with businesses, research bodies, key journalists and broadcasters to extract the media stories that will shine a spotlight on the amazing life sciences work already being carried out in the capital. Your work will build London’s reputation as a great place to do business and enhance London & Partners’ reputation in the media as an innovative, insightful and desirable strategic and commercial partner.

You will work closely with our FDI, audience insight and Brand teams, as well as the GLA and other stakeholders as appropriate, to ensure an integrated and coherent strategy for generating international coverage.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Report into the Head of Media & PR to deliver the communications strategy for Life Sciences
  • Take a leadership role and work collaboratively with senior managers and other members of the Media & PR team to drive the strategy forward
  • Deliver pro-active communications to promote London as a destination for business
  • Develop ideas for positive business-related media stories to place in the media
  • Ensure the build and/or maintenance of a suitable network of journalists in domestic and international media and business news media
  • Act as a credible spokesperson for media interviews and train other key spokespeople within the organisation
  • Manage where necessary the output from relevant PR agencies to ensure our messaging reaches a wider audience in priority markets
  • Manage and lead reactive and crisis management communications
  • Lead on joint communications issues with stakeholders such as the Mayor’s Office
  • Represent the London & Partners communications team in dealings with commercial partners
  • Allocate and manage budgets, evaluate media coverage and identify benefits in kind to achieve relevant targets and deliver great value for money
  • Background research work, planning media diary for Life Sciences, and preparing press releases and briefing documents
  • Act as on call duty manager for press calls (when on rota)

Person Specification

The successful candidate will demonstrate:-

Knowledge and Experience

  • Degree or equivalent level education in a scientific subject preferred
  • Proven track record of success in senior strategy development role in a complex organisation, preferably within FDI, or experience of working as a business or science journalist
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Extensive news management and crisis communications skills
  • Excellent news sense and ability to identify news-worthy stories (particularly for the business/financial/economic sector)
  • Good media contacts and in-depth knowledge of international media (particularly in key markets; with local expertise)
  • High level negotiating and influencing skills including ability to successfully influence very senior individuals internally and externally
  • Highly developed understanding and experience of working with diverse stakeholders across the public and private sectors
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and resources
