This is an exciting opportunity to play a role at the forefront of communications in one of Whitehall’s  busiest press offices. With a diverse portfolio of policy areas ranging from farming and flooding to food security and animal welfare, Defra’s work is constantly in the public eye - from TV news and the national press, to Twitter.

As a Communications Officer in our team, you’ll shape the news agenda as it relates to some of the most high profile issues in government. Quickly getting to grips with diverse and challenging policies, you’ll deliver innovative campaigns across print, broadcast and digital media. It’s a role in which no two days will ever be the same. Working in a fast paced environment, you may find yourself briefing journalists, advising senior officials on media handling, and arranging interviews with Ministers. Bringing plenty of ideas to the table, you’ll collaborate with a host of dedicated colleagues to strategically plan and implement communications activity. From channel to content to timing, you’ll help to ensure maximum impact, engagement and understanding.

An experienced press officer, planner or communications professional, you’re ambitious, talented and highly motivated. Naturally, you’ll combine a keen understanding of the news and a flair for compelling communication - both in writing and in person. Knowledge of diverse communications channels, including digital, is essential. You thrive under pressure, making the right decisions in the moment, and meeting every deadline. Crucially, you have the confidence, credibility and political savvy to advise, persuade and negotiate at every level. Besides the rewarding nature of the job itself, the benefits that come with it are excellent. The package includes generous holiday entitlement and attractive pension options. You'll also benefit from our commitment to nurturing and developing talent.
