Develop and maintain a proactive, strategic communications programme for the BBA.  Work closely with the Executive Director for External Affairs to build relationships with key journalists and publications.  Scope out and develop news stories which help promote the banking industry and the BBA’s core purpose of restoring trust in the UK’s banks.  Coordinate the organisations’ strategic grid which shapes press activity and events. Draft articles for mainstream papers, blogs and trade press.  Develop and enhance the BBA’s digital and social media content.  Become a leading spokesperson for the BBA across all media outlets and conduct media interviews for trade and regional media.

Management/Supervisory responsibilities

The Media Relations Director will lead the BBA’s media team of 3 people reporting into the Executive Director for External Affairs.  They will have direct line management of the senior press officer and press officer will report into the Media Relations Director.

Main duties


  • Lead the planning and execution of all proactive and reactive media relations work by the media team for the BBA including: liaising with journalists, preparing media plans, press releases and press briefings
  • Devise, implement and evaluate the BBA’s communications plan, working with the External Affairs Director and other key directors in the External Affairs team
  • Work with the Executive Director for External Affairs to develop key messaging for the BBA
  • Act as a leading spokesperson for the BBA on all media outlets and conduct face to face interviews (regional and trade media mainly)
  • Coordinate, brief and handle broadcast media bids for the Chief Executive and BBA Policy Directors
  • Oversee the BBA’s long term strategic grid and coordinate media and campaign activity accordingly
  • Identify creative and proactive media campaigns for the BBA and lead on their delivery and execution
  • Work with the BBA Policy Directors to identify and develop research that will help promote the BBA and its members
  • Provide, coordinate and oversee all out of hours media service as part of a rota system
  • Oversee (and cover where necessary) the editing of BBA morning brief
  • Oversee and expand the BBA’s social media offering
  • Liaise with the BBA’s web and publications team ensuring that online and published content promotes the banking industry and the BBA’s core messages
  • Manage the BBA’s long term strategic grid and coordinate external activity accordingly
  • Build and manage relationships with key national finance, consumer and political journalists
  • Draft speeches and op eds for mainstream papers, blogs and trade press
  • Manage and oversee the BBA’s monitoring of news and breaking stories
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of relationships with banking members in press departments, as well as press offices in other finance and business trade bodies and consumer groups

Education and Experience

Qualifications/education required:

  • Degree or equivalent

Experience required

  • Proven substantial experience of working in and running a busy media relations team (10-12 years minimum)
  • Proven substantial experience of working for a major national news organisation, a political party press office, a busy government department press office, a PR agency or a large corporate
  • Proven experience of running and executing successful proactive media campaigns on low budgets
  • Proven team management experience
  • Proven experience of crisis management
