The Defra group has a wide range of responsibilities that are critical to ensuring rich and fulfilling lives for people in this country.  We are responsible for England’s environment, our countryside and rural economy, the food and farming sectors and have lead responsibility for protection from a wide range of natural threats and hazards.

The internal communications challenge across the Defra group is one of the most complex and exciting opportunities in public sector communications.  You will be joining at a unique time of change in the department and across its agencies and ALBs as Defra responds to EU exit and goes through a wide-ranging transformation programme, which includes the creation of one of the Government’s first group-wide communications team.

We are looking for an exceptional leader and communications professional who can transform the group’s internal communications capability and deliver impactful, culture shifting communications that will support 22,000 staff through a time of unprecedented change and opportunity. You will be responsible for developing, delivering and managing the ongoing development and implementation of the Defra group internal communications strategy. You will have the opportunity to shape strategy, delivery change and build relationships across the Government Communications Profession.

To be successful in this post you will have exceptional leadership skills with experience of leading change and enabling cultural transformation.  You will have extensive experience in designing and delivering effective communications strategies and an ability to work alongside communications professionals to deliver innovative communications solutions. You will also be confident in building strong relationships and working with senior stakeholders within a political environment. Finally, fast-paced and demanding work will inspire you to deliver your best work and to motivate others to do the same.
