Job Details

Network Rail is delivering the biggest programme of sustained investment the railway has ever seen – £35bn over the next 5 years (2019-2024). All to make the railway more reliable than ever for the 4.8 million passengers we serve every day.

We provide an essential public service and great dialogue with our stakeholders is a vital part of improving that service. The communications team at Network Rail helps the business to grow trust and understanding of the challenges of running a railway and build vital relationships with the public, passengers, neighbours, business communities and stakeholders including politicians.

So, what does that mean for you? Simply put – this is an opportunity to make a real difference. By building great relationships with stakeholders that help to deliver a better journey for passengers.

By taking the experience you have gained already in your career coupled with your political acumen and extensive knowledge of Westminster, engaging with politicians and other third-party stakeholders will come as second nature to you. Your common-sense approach, empathy and first-class writing skills will ensure that the right message is delivered first time, every time. You will know how to design and deliver strategic political messages that support our wider communications strategy. But you don’t want to stop there – you understand the importance of being creative with how messages are delivered, and you understand the importance of using different channels, including digital, to do so. Forever the influencer, your empathy, gravitas and commitment to improving the passenger experience will help build trust in Network Rail and our executive leadership team.

This is a big business with a big responsibility and your role will typically see you managing the response to a select committee, driving forward an integrated communications campaign on a core business issue, writing a speech for our Executive Leadership team or running a great event to engage our stakeholders.

Alongside your team, who happen to be a lovely bunch of people, you will help us to do a great thing – serve passengers better than ever. Through your dedication and our supportive culture there is a real opportunity to take your amazing experience to date and turn it into a fantastic career within one of the country’s most high-profile communications departments.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting our Executive team in their engagement with ministers and national stakeholders
  • Providing insight and intelligence to our Executive Leadership Team and senior colleagues on political developments as they affect Network Rail
  • Leading strategic engagement and building relationships with MPs and Peers
  • Producing relevant, well-written, concise briefings, speeches and letters that make complex issues easy to understand
  • Managing the integrated communications response to select committees and other high-profile inquiries and reviews
  • Running great events
  • Working closely with colleagues across the communications department to deliver integrated campaigns in line with our communications strategy.

Like what you have seen so far? If the answer is yes and you can demonstrate being a strong writer, good political judgement and a strategic thinker, then this is probably the job for you.
