A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join the Leeds and Partners communications team, working closely with regional, national and international media to raise the profile of the city and drive long term investment.

Role Description

Responsible for supporting the implementation of the overall communications strategy of Leeds and Partners. Responsible for the effective management of relationships with the media and other key stakeholders.

Core Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the development and the delivery of Leeds and Partners’ corporate communications strategy, focusing in particular on developing Leeds and Partners’ media profile in key prioritised projects and activities
  • Devise strategies to promote Leeds through the appropriate communication channels, generating coverage in the press and promoting awareness of the city, to enhance its reputation and build its profile
  • Promote Leeds to national, regional, local and specialist media on all aspects of Leeds and Partners’ activities
  • Provide professional communications and media handling advice on risks, opportunities and high profile issues to the rest of Leeds and Partners members
  • Ensure that all communication strategies and plans support and enhance Leeds and Partners’ relationships with Leeds’ diverse communities and businesses
  • Anticipate the emerging news agenda and contribute to an action plan
  • Provide clear and trusted briefing to media
  • Develop and build relationships with target media, promote the  positive reputation of Leeds and Partners and contribute to the delivery of strategic goals as directed by the Head of Media
  • Produce high quality briefing materials, and occasionally present information to core stakeholders and industry influencers in public, private, and third sectors
  • Work in partnership with the city-wide communications group to ensure effective delivery of media messages, taking into account political impacts
  • Maintain and manage an active network of relationships with key representatives of the national, regional, local and specialist media so as to facilitate favourable and accurate coverage of Leeds and Partners’ agenda for Leeds, rebutting inaccuracies and negative stories to ensure delivery of Leeds and Partners’ strategic objectives
  • Plan and implement agreed media relations campaigns aimed at trade and/or media at national, regional and local levels, including organisation of events, news conferences and press visits.

Other Accountabilities

  • Work with Leeds and Partners stakeholder, inward investment, marketing and tourism officers and external partners to maintain an understanding of current projects, aims and activities, and identify and capitalise on appropriate media opportunities
  • Demonstrably adhere to relevant Leeds and Partners and project media relations requirements and protocol
  • Draft copy for press releases to the highest standards of plain English and obtain sign-off from the Head of Media
  • Contribute high quality, pro-active and re-active news content, for internal and external Leeds and Partners’ publications, including the website, newsletter and other corporate publications
  • Monitor and archive Leeds and Partners’ media coverage and campaign effectiveness and general media coverage relevant to Leeds and Partners, circulating cuttings, breaking news and other information across the team
  • Refer sensitive and political issues to the Head of Media
  • Carry out specific projects ensuring delivery to time, cost, quality and corporate standards
  • Manage various projects simultaneously and, where necessary, direct project teams in order to achieve outputs
  • Contribute to the management of all corporate working practises
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and corporate governance matters within the team

Person Specification

Part 1

Qualifications, Knowledge and Understanding

  • Degree qualified with experience in media / public relations
  • Good knowledge of the national, Leeds regional and local media and relevant specialist media
  • Understand different audiences and uses most effect and appropriate means of communications channels
  • Understand Leeds and Partners’ work priorities within political environment and demonstrates good judgement and news sense

Key Experiences

  • Experience managing issues in a busy media office or equivalent environments
  • A track record of success in a media office with demonstrable ability to influence outcomes
  • Experience of producing and implementing communications strategies
  • Experience of organising and prioritising tasks
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines and deploying internal and external resources
  • Experience of working in a busy/demanding news environment
