Working in an ever-developing leisure and entertainment industry, this regulator is responsible for protecting the public interest, increasing transparency, and maximising returns on a popular, national pastime. This is a newly created External Communications Manager position focusing on a high profile, exciting project delivering a new Licence Competition.
 

The opportunity

This External Communications Manager role is responsible for delivering effective and impactful communications campaigns for the high profile competition to a range of audiences in line with the priorities set out in the wider strategy.

This work will be delivered through proactive media and online publicity, creative social media, stakeholder communication, holding press events and building partnerships with key organisations. The role will require being able to forge partnerships and relationships with external organisations (both private and public) in order for the organisation to maximise the potential for the next licence competition. 

Along with delivering proactive communications a key part of the role is day to day liaison with national, regional and trade journalists and undertaking robust issue management. The role will require researching and formulating robust responses to questions from the media. 

The role will require the ability to think strategically, be resilient and able to work on many projects at the same time, be able to solve problems and be confident in communicating with journalists and be able to brief senior stakeholders including the CEO as and when required.

This role will deliver 360degree external communications campaigns – devising strategies for announcements, producing communications assets – written material, images, infographics, videos as required. 

It will focus heavily on the demand for responding accurately and strategically to media enquiries, providing an agile and responsive service and working to develop and build networks of media contacts. 


 

As the London based External Communications Manager you will be responsible for:

  • Devising, developing and implementing impactful, creative and strategic communications which defend, explain and promote the campaign
  • Take responsibility for delivering communications across a variety of platforms: including devising strategies for announcements, updating the website and keeping it up to date,  running social media activity, producing communications assets, including but not limited to, written material, images, infographics, videos as required; and organising events as and when required.
  • Building strong relationships with print, online and broadcast media.
  • Providing confident and expert external communications counsel to senior colleagues including interview preparation, practical advice, media briefing, message creation and providing critique.
  • Dealing with reactive media enquiries, issue and crisis communications
  • Supporting the Head of Communications with the day to day running of the communications activity for the campaign

Competencies for this London based External Communications Manager:

  • At least 5 years of experience at dealing with journalists, and experience of working on high profile stories in the national media
  • Experience in a broad communications role with proactive planning and strategy development  
  • Excellent communications skills both written and verbal 
  • Experience of writing communications material for a variety of audiences in a creative and engaging way
  • Proven experience in delivering effective and creative communications campaigns from start to finish
  • Proven ability to spot reputational issues and proactively mitigate against them
  • Experience at creating digital assets for use in campaigns 
  • Experience at writing and delivering strategic communications plans for projects which have delivered results 
  • Skilled and experienced at managing social media as part of campaigns, creating content and identifying third party endorsers
  • Experience of organising videos and photo shoots when required
  • Confident in managing external suppliers
  • Dedicated to building network of press and media contacts
  • Able to influence and persuade external and internal stakeholders
  • Keen interest in the wider marketing and communications trends and development 
  • Resilient and can work under pressure 
  • Self-starter and also thrives as part of a team 
  • Proven ability to problem solve
