Job Details
The organisation
Our client is a non-governmental public body that invests more than £300 million National Lottery and government money each year into projects, programmes and campaigns that help people to get active and play sport. They believe that being physically active enriches lives, builds stronger communities and creates a healthier and happier nation and that everyone in England feels able to take part in sport or activity, regardless of age, background or ability. With the stubborn inequalities in sports participation, the organisation’s current strategy is also particularly focussed on widening participation in sport so that many more underrepresented groups, including people who have done very little sport and physical activity before, can benefit.
The opportunity
Our client is looking for a Press and Communications Officer to join their fast paced communications and external affairs team. Reporting into the Head of Press, you will deliver positive media coverage for the organisation, protect and enhance their reputation and increase the understanding of their mission, impact and expertise. This is a unique opportunity to join an organisation at the forefront of grassroots campaigning for sport that has a real impact on communities and people’s lives.
Main responsibilities
- Be the first port of call for incoming media enquiries
- Use a wide variety of tactics to promote the organisation’s activities, including securing comment and feature pieces, and identifying and placing media case studies
- Take responsibility for media monitoring, identifying opportunities and potential issues, delivering the morning news summary
- Proactively spotting and shaping opportunities to raise the organisation’s profile and expert spokespeople with new and existing contacts
- Help to develop new tools to help recipients of lottery awards and promote their projects and act as advocates
- Take ownership of delivering PR and communications plans for specific Sport England campaigns, programmes and announcements
- Work closely with our client’s key stakeholders, including partner organisations, and Department for Digital of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)
- Support the Head of Press to deliver the Communications strategy and associated media plans
Key skills and experience required
- Proven experience in PR or Communications
- Ability to interpret and present information and identify opportunities and news angles that secure high volumes of positive media coverage
- Excellent written communication skills with extensive experience writing quality articles for publication, press releases and briefings
- Experience of handling media enquiries calmly during crisis situations
- The ability to effectively work with external partner to deliver organisational goals
