The opportunity
A public body which enables people all around the country to get active and take part in sport is looking for an Interim Public Affairs Officer to join their busy External Affairs team.  Working with Westminster, Whitehall and broader stakeholder groups, you will contribute to a proactive programme of engagement and influence to build the organisation’s reputation and deliver its core strategy.
 
Main responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain productive relationships with DCMS officials, providing accurate information for answers to Parliamentary Questions in a timely manner, input for Ministerial briefings and correspondence, and advice on grassroots sport policy issues on an ad-hoc basis
  • Provide expert policy advice and guidance to colleagues at DCMS, other Government Departments, and Parliamentarians on community sport policy and the work of the organisation and its partners
  • Actively monitor and respond to relevant political and policy developments and take a proactive approach to horizon scanning and producing briefing documents for key internal stakeholders, including the Executive Team, CEO and Chair
  • Identify and build productive relationships with a growing number of external organisations and seek to positively influence these stakeholders who can in turn help the organisation to meet its strategic aims f
  • Support the External Affairs team in designing and delivering innovative and new public affairs strategies to engage a diverse range of stakeholders, and work across the organisation to offer external affairs support and expertise at all levels.

 
Key skills and experience required

  • Previous experience of building effective relationships and influencing senior figures within both Whitehall and Westminster on a regular basis and successfully advocating on behalf of your organisation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to influence and persuade key decision makers
  • An in-depth understanding of how parliament and Whitehall operates and an ability to analyse and interpret events in the wider political context
  • Adept at thinking creatively and identifying opportunities to influence
  • Positive outlook.
