You will be involved in shaping why, how and what we communicate to our internal team and across the department.  There will be opportunity to share best practice, develop others and be innovative as we equip everyone to use digital, data and technology with confidence, ambition and creativity.

You will be responsible for all communications for our Digital Service, and as such you will ensure that potential business value from digital services are captured, optimised and communicated.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Create and execute a Digital Service communications strategy with a forward look ensuring communications are pro-active throughout the year, while ensuring delivery against the strategy
  • Develop and coordinate activity and horizon scanning for potential communication opportunities; develop the campaign narrative; plan, produce, publish and place innovative, engaging, audience focused digital, written, audio, face-to-face and visual content for use across a wide range of central and internal communication channels
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate campaign activity across digital and social media platforms
  • Build key relationships across the organisation (including policy teams, press office and communications contacts across the DfT and in other government departments)
  • Translate business objectives into communications objectives and generate ideas and plans to meet them• Identify and build audiences, gather insight and deliver engagement
  • Spot opportunities to advance our communications objectives while identifying and managing risks
  • Work with project delivery teams to ensure communications are on time, ensuring adaptability to project communication demands in a timely manner
  • Lead on communications activities for Digital Service events, e.g. all-staff away days, service launches
  • Manage and co-ordinate Digital Service response to FOI’s and PQs, directly liaising with DfT agencies.

You will have the option of being based at either our London or Hastings office. We encourage remote working, with a minimum of 40% of your week being office based. You will be expected to take a flexible approach to this to ensure business needs are met.

Successful candidates based in Hastings will attract an SEO national salary of £37,428 as will those who are not based in London for at least 3 days a week

About you

Passionate about communications, you will be a strong leader with excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentations. You will be confident in dealing with people at all levels within the organisation and have the credibility to influence at a senior level. You will be able to think and plan strategically, working with people from different business areas, and be able to deal with ambiguity. You will have experience of using a full range of media channels, including digital, to drive communications activity and share best practice with the wider team. You will have previous experience of communications/PR in the public sector or journalism, ideally in an Internal Communications role.  You will be well organised with the ability to prioritise and manage competing demands. You will be a strategic thinker who can look beyond the norm and offer an innovative direction for your team.

The Digital Service Internal Communications Manager role sits within the Digital Service team as part of our CIO Advisory function.  There will be a dotted line and strong links to the Head of Internal Communications for DfT.

A team of more than 100 professionals and growing, our vision is for digital to be in the DfT DNA. To get there, we will need to equip everyone to use digital with confidence, ambition and creativity.

Responsibilities

We are responsible for:

  • providing policy, guidance, and funding to English local authorities to help them run and maintain their road networks, improve passenger and freight travel, and develop new major transport schemes
  • investing in, maintaining and operating around 4,300 miles of the motorway and trunk road network in England through Highways England
  • setting the strategic direction for the rail industry in England and Wales – funding investment in infrastructure through Network Rail, awarding and managing rail franchises, and regulating rail fares
  • improving English bus services through funding and regulation
  • working to make our roads less congested and polluted by promoting lower carbon transport, including cycling and walking
  • encouraging the use of new technology such as smart ticketing and low carbon vehicles
  • maintaining high standards of safety and security in transport
  • supporting the maritime sector by producing the overall strategy and planning policy for ports in England and Wales
  • setting national aviation policy, working with airlines, airports, the Civil Aviation Authority and NATS (the UK’s air traffic service)
