Internal Communications Manager - Policy

My client, a not-for-profit official public body is looking for an Internal Communications Manager (Policy Comms) to work alongside their Head of Internal Communications and Engagement to deliver their Internal Communications strategy. Based in their offices in London, the successful candidate will responsible for the operational management of the intranet and other digital channels – developing and delivering a roadmap of improvement to build a social intranet that meets the needs of the employees and organisational strategy.

You will ensure internal digital channels, including the intranet, are developed and aligned with the service-wide internal communication and engagement strategy. You will be a strong writer with line management experience ideally.

You’ll be accountable for:

  • working collaboratively with colleagues to monitor and build relationships with stakeholders
  • consumer organisations, charities, government and the media, to help us gain smart insight into issues
  • understanding the context and wider environment in which we operate – including what’s driving industry, political and media agendas, as well as consumer trends and how people feel about us more generally
  • inspiring confidence and being an ambassador for the organisation’s tone, communicating and influencing in a clear, balanced and thoughtful way – over the phone, online, in writing, and in person – using the right channel to engage people in what matters and ensure messages are consistent
  • managing the varied work of the stakeholder team and planning to get things done on time and efficiently – be it handling media enquiries quickly and appropriately or organising the editorial production of a range of publications
  • playing a part in leading, coaching and motivating the stakeholder team – making people feel proud to work there and building their skills and knowledge, while proactively monitoring and managing performance and addressing issues effectively
  • representing the organisations externally, whether it’s at events to reach particular stakeholders, helping the press understand who we are and what we do, or keeping our communication platforms fit for purpose
  • thinking strategically about how people will respond to messages and putting measures in place to capture, sort and share insight in order to report themes to senior managers
  • proactively looking out for risks which could have wide-reaching implications, such as to reputation – showing judgement in how to manage and when to escalate these issues
  • working with suppliers – assisting with EU-compliant tendering where required, monitoring costs, quality and timeliness of services
  • making sure you’re delivering a fair and efficient service that reflects the diversity of their customers and people, through everything you do

Your experience will include:

  • having successfully managed or provided professional leadership to a team
  • building, and picking up insights through strong relationships both internally and externally
  • influencing, negotiating and persuading across a range of stakeholders and at a senior level
  • adapting your communication style by taking individual needs into account, recognising that our customers come from a diverse range of backgrounds and thinking about the issues that might be behind what people are saying
  • working out which channels are best for which messages, and how best to engage with a variety of audiences
  • using your common sense and judgement to analyse and interpret complex information, identifying key facts and drawing conclusions
  • working within consumer advice, advocacy, government, media, policy, publishing, public relations or complaints investigation
  • writing, editing, proofing and publishing quality documents, reports or promotional material
  • planning and prioritising in a changing, busy environment – caring about achieving results as a team while being flexible
  • being involved in setting objectives and challenging people to exceed
  • expectations
  • successfully engaging, coaching and developing others to perform and improve
