About us

Crisis is the UK’s national homelessness charity, but we don’t want to be here forever; we know that homelessness is not inevitable and that together, we can end it for good.

The Media and Social Media team is at the heart of Crisis’ External Affairs division, telling the stories of people who’ve experienced homelessness, publicising high profile campaigns that help to change laws and perceptions, and helping to raise money for our vital services. Having just launched our plan to end homelessness and with our new 5-year organisational strategy on the horizon, it’s an exciting time to join our team.

About the role

As Crisis’ Media Officer, you will play a key role helping us plan and deliver high-profile media campaigns that bring our work to life, inspiring members of the public and politicians to join our fight to end homelessness.

Your role will be creative and varied, from sourcing inspirational real-life stories, to producing hard-hitting news stories that capture the imagination of our audiences. You will also build solid relationships with key journalists to help secure in-depth and nuanced coverage that truly gets to the heart of the complex issues surrounding homelessness. And you will play a key role in bringing to life our biggest organisational campaigns, like Crisis at Christmas and The Plan to End Homelessness.

Knowledge/Skills and Experience:

You will have:

  • Substantial experience of working within a busy media team and of developing (or supporting the development of) high-profile media campaigns that have helped achieve organisational objectives
  • A strong understanding of the news and PR landscape and how to tailor stories that work for a range of outlets
  • Experience in telling people’s stories who are, or have been, in vulnerable situations, sensitively and with the utmost respect for their safety and wellbeing
  • Experience of developing creative solutions for campaigns that need publicizing, but don’t immediately lend themselves to media coverage
  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to write for a range of audiences, ranging from political to consumer campaigns
  • A knack for taking complex issues and transforming them into clear, simple, and engaging concepts
  • Commitment to Crisis’s purpose and values including equality and social inclusion

Benefits

  • As a member of the team you will have access to a wide range of employee benefits including:
  • Interest free loans to purchase a train season ticket or a bike or for a deposit to secure a tenancy
  • Mandatory pension scheme, with an employer contribution of 8%
  • 25 days’ annual leave which increases with service to 28 days
  • Alongside our excellent staff benefits, we will support your ongoing development to build your skills, experience and career.
