We are immersed in an exciting period of change. At the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) our work ranges from supporting the UK’s world-leading food, farming and fishing industries to protecting the environment and providing robust defences against natural threats. Leaving the EU will fundamentally transform the work we do and how we deliver it. We are embracing this opportunity to become even more efficient, focused and innovative. Join us, and you will be at the heart of this change - helping us to secure a more sustainable future for the UK.

We are therefore building our communications capabilities to deliver key messages surrounding Defra’s policies and activities.

As Senior Digital Engagement Editor you may have worked in a journalism or press office environment previously, and you will have a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to develop a story and get it to the right audience, translating complex policy issues into content that is easy to understand and share.

With an outstanding knowledge of current social channels including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, you will be passionate about digital storytelling and emerging platforms and you will have experience of using content creation tools such as Adobe Creative Suite and Final Cut Pro.

You will:

  • Use your innate news sense to tailor multichannel content for a variety of platforms.
  • Nurture excellent relationships with external organisations and collaborate with them (for example, social publishers, media editors and digital influencers) to develop and seed stories that engage online audiences in Defra’s work.
  • Develop and commission remarkable and memorable digital content (for example, video, animation, data visualisation, graphics, quizzes, Instagram stories and polls).
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of key issues that are of interest to specific audiences to create content packages to pitch to third party media outlets.

Everyone in Defra is supported to develop their skills and capabilities. You will have access to learning and development from quality providers and support from mentors and coaches. We offer flexible working alongside a range of other policies and schemes to support your physical and emotional wellbeing. Our comprehensive benefits offer includes generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, volunteering days, childcare vouchers and other salary sacrifice options, and an employee discount scheme.
