Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

Chief Press Officer

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, is at the forefront of government’s relationship with business and of its efforts to build an economy that works for everyone.

Underpinned by the delivery of an ambitious Industrial Strategy, we pride ourselves on creative cross-channel communications to tell the story of how we are making a Britain fit for the future.

Our wide-ranging agenda - which includes energy security, mergers and takeovers, workers’ rights, and the biggest investment in science and innovation in a generation- means we are always in the news. This is a demanding but exciting role.

We are looking for an exceptional chief press officer to join our management team to drive innovative communications strategies, deal with fast-breaking news stories, and win the trust of our ministers.

You will have great judgment, acute political awareness, solid communication skills and the leadership qualities not only to run your own team, but act as a role model to a wider team of around 20 press officers.

If you want to build a media career at the heart of government, we can give you plenty of proactive announcements and crisis management experience to hone your skills.

Person Profile

You will:

  • be a highly experienced communications professional with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • be able to work under pressure for sustained periods – while also maintaining sound judgement
  • give clear and trusted advice to Ministers and officials and have awareness of broader political context
  • have good relationship management skills and be able to maintain key links with relevant policy and external partners
  • understand the rapidly changing nature of communications including social media – and how to put that to good use

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Playing a role in the senior management team in the BEIS media team to deliver a high-quality media service to all ministers and the department
  • Providing leadership, guidance, management, development and support to your team
  • Challenging your team and policy officials to identify risks and ensure communications match the needs of the government and core audiences
  • Working closely with key stakeholder organisations, our arms-length-bodies and executive agencies
  • Providing confident and authoritative spokesmanship on behalf of the department and build effective relationships with key journalists
  • Supporting your team to drive innovative and creative communications
  • Taking part in the office back-up rota to provide support to our out-of-hours media service

What we can offer:

The BEIS communications team is a great place to work. We invest in developing our people and value diverse skills across the communications disciplines.

We can offer you:

  • the chance to work in a high-performing team respected across government
  • access to learning and development programmes both in the department and through the Government Communications Service
  • a competitive remuneration package including civil service pension
  • opportunities to broaden your skills across the wider communications team from external affairs to internal communications
