Press Officer (IO)

Would you like to be at the cutting edge of the news agenda, working on many of the biggest stories of the day?

The Home Office press office is on the lookout for astute, talented and creative communicators who relish the buzz of a busy newsroom to join our excellent media team.

As a Home Office press officer, you are guaranteed a varied and eventful working day. In any given week you could find yourself organising interviews for a Minister or the Home Secretary on a high-profile visit, devising an imaginative media plan to propel an announcement to the top of the broadcast headlines and thinking on your feet to come up with a punchy statement to combat a critical front page headline. No two days are the same.

The Home Office is responsible for a wide variety of policies instrumental to ensuring the UK’s safety, security and prosperity – from counter-terrorism, policing and border security to immigration, modern slavery and the fight against serious and organised crime. Our press officers play a vital role in ensuring that these issues are communicated effectively and powerfully across a wide range of traditional and social media channels.

We are looking for candidates with excellent judgement, drive and significant experience in communications, public relations or journalism, who can demonstrate their passion for politics and current affairs. They must be able to turn complex information into clear and impactful messages and work to tight deadlines. We value individuals who bring fresh ideas and new approaches to ensure that our team is constantly moving forward.

You will be working in a creative, close-knit team who are committed, politically savvy and come from a variety of professional and geographical backgrounds. This makes the press office a vibrant, energising place to work where individuals’ ideas are championed.

Besides the rewarding nature of the job itself, a competitive salary and a Civil Service pension, you'll also benefit from our commitment to nurturing and developing talent.

Press officers’ duties include:

• organising Ministerial interviews and media opportunities around announcements, visits, speeches and events;

• providing timely proactive and reactive media handling advice to Ministers and senior policy officials;

• skilfully and effectively briefing journalists, with accuracy and authority;

• working closely with Ministers’ private offices, officials and communications colleagues to plan and implement media strategies across a broad range of media outlets including specialist, lifestyle, online and other new media;

• strategically planning communications activity across all disciplines to maximise our impact and negotiating with private offices and Number 10 on timing and handling plans; and

• developing an understanding of issues across the department to enable you to play an effective part in the wider press office team.
