Senior Journalist and Writer

Liverpool Hope University has 175 years of experience in delivering higher education since its first of three founding college in 1844. In the recent past the University has dramatically changed its profile; it is now in the top 50 Universities in the UK and is top in the NW region for student experience. The University holds a TEF gold award and is proud that 98.1% of its graduates are in employment or further study 6 months after graduating. Liverpool Hope has a strong tradition of research intensity and has a wide range of local national and international partnerships. In order to identify and to maximise the profile of all of the University’s achievements, Liverpool Hope is looking for an experienced journalist to join our External Relations Team as senior Journalist/reporter and writer. We need an imaginative individual who is able to identify and write about the most exciting and newsworthy developments at our award-winning University.

The successful applicant will be an experienced journalist with a commendable record in reporting on a range of different types of story. Your track record will include original, high impact stories. Your experience, contacts and confidence will enable you to promote the University to best effect. The ability to work to tight deadlines, make quick and sound judgements, and communicate the significance of University and other Educational news is key. 

As senior journalist and writer you will be responsible for the team that undertakes picture and text editing, copy editing, updating the University website and promoting content across all social media platforms. This responsibility extends to online content management, writing and tracking down news stories and quotes. You will also have a significant role in assisting the Head of External Relations with the day to day running of the department while working directly with senior leaders of the university, academics and university supporters and alumni. 

This is an ideal job for an experienced journalist with opportunities to gain knowledge in all areas of Higher Education, as well as the chance to develop with a rapidly developing University.

The successful candidate will be degree or equivalently qualified and will have experience of managing a team, online content management, and a working knowledge of social media; excellent writing and copy-editing skills, a good nose for a story and be proactive in looking for new ideas and content to promote the University, its departments, scholarship and courses.

The ideal candidate should have the following attributes:

  • Excellent writing skills and an eye for a story
  • Ability to identify stories that will enhance the University’s reputation
  • Good research skills and a hands-on approach to investigating and good research skills
  • Ability to work with academic colleagues to construct a good story
  • Working knowledge of social media and using it to maximise reach
  • Experience in managing a team (ideal but not essential)
  • Knowledge of the HE sector (ideal but not essential)
