Job Details

Join the Royal College of Anaesthetists to communicate some of the biggest issues facing our members, healthcare and the work of anaesthetists - the largest group of doctors within UK hospitals.

We are looking for an experienced, motivated and creative Press Officer, who will be responsible for driving both proactive and reactive media work for the College. As well as building and maintaining relationships with key journalists and media titles, a key element of the role is to identify both College activity and healthcare issues and turn this into compelling media stories to engage our target audiences and demonstrate the College’s responsibilities. From briefing media and organising interviews, to developing and pitching regular and targeted media ideas, op-eds and blogs, this is an opportunity to demonstrate your talent in delivering relevant and timely news coverage across print, broadcast and digital media.

To be successful in this role, you will have experience in a similar role within a press office, newsroom or other communication team and will be able to demonstrate success of implementing campaigns and writing media releases in the UK health environment. You will have excellent knowledge of UK national and regional media, as well as a genuine interest for health communications. It is also crucial for you to have the ability to translate and deliver scientific information comprehensively, to a range of audiences.

Due to the nature of the role, it is essential that you are highly proactive, have strong IT skills, an eye for detail and the ability to prioritise your workload effectively to hit tight deadlines.

Short-listed applicants will normally be provided with at least 48 hours’ notice to attend the panel interview.

Unfortunately, due to the volume of applications, we are unable to provide detailed feedback to candidates on their application. Only short-listed applicants will be contacted after the closing date.

Closing date for applications: Sunday 17 February 2019

Who we are

The Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) is the third largest medical Royal College in the UK by membership. With a combined membership of 22,000 fellows and members, it represents and ensures the quality of patient care by safeguarding standards in the three specialties of anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine.

The College is the professional body responsible for the specialty of anaesthesia throughout the UK at all stages of our fellows’ and members’ careers. As anaesthetists, we have overall responsibility for patients’ wellbeing before, during and after surgery. We are the lynchpin that holds secondary and tertiary care together and are the UK’s largest hospital specialty.

16% of all hospital consultants are anaesthetists and
over two-thirds of hospital in-patients will see an anaesthetist

The College champions the diverse and critical work of anaesthetists, and the science that underpins our work. We recruit, train and examine anaesthetists to the most exacting standards. We support our fellows and members throughout their careers irrelevant of age and region. We fund research to ensure that anaesthesia continues to advance at a rapid rate. We promote the sharing of knowledge and best practice, as well as working with government on crucial policies, and with other stakeholders in the UK and overseas to make sure that anaesthesia and anaesthetists play a central role in shaping and delivering the healthcare agenda.

The College is the home of the Faculty of Pain Medicine and one of the eight parent Colleges of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.
