The Role

The Communications Office is driving forward a programme of work to better align communications resource across the House of Commons behind the organisation’s strategic priorities.  The new Head of media, planning and external affairs will have a key part to play in this - working closely with the Communications Director.

As well as overseeing the work of the central media team and a new external affairs team, the post holder will also lead a new House-wide approach to communications planning, media monitoring. 

Over the next two years the House of Commons will be at the forefront of national media attention and scrutiny, the successful candidate will combine first-class news and media judgement with an ability to plan strategically, harness the role of external partners, and develop the capability and infrastructure of the team.

The Person

The successful candidate will have the following skills/experience:

  • Excellent news sense and written and verbal communications skills.
  • Proven success in overseeing the development and delivery of effective communications strategies and plans - underpinned by robust evaluation programmes.
  • Strong relationship management skills, effective at negotiating and influencing at a senior level. Experience working effectively on projects with multiple stakeholders.
