Why BT?

Born in 1846, we’ve led the way in telecommunications since the dawn of the industry.  Our roots go back to the first telecommunications company in the UK and over the last two centuries, we’ve innovated, challenged and pioneered the way we communicate and connect across the globe.

Now we’re undergoing one of the biggest transformations in our history. In almost every area of BT, we’re shaking things up and looking for new ways to do what we do best – delivering amazing things for our customers, while constantly striving to make BT a brilliant place to work for our people.

It means there’s a lot happening but it’s an exciting time to be part of our team. So, if you have the drive, optimism and resilience to help propel us forward we’ll offer a wealth of opportunities to learn, experience new things and pursue new careers. If that’s you and what you’re looking for, we’d love you to be part of our future.

Why Internal Communications?

With so much going on, our role in internal communications has never been more important. Our mission is to help everyone in the business understand what we’re doing and where we’re going; to create a community of 100,000 advocates working for one company with a shared vision and purpose. We work to three core values at BT: personal, simple, brilliant that help shape the work we do, so we can play our part in making BT a great place to work. It’s challenging, at times exhausting, but it’s also hugely rewarding and fun. And we’re in it together.

 Why this job matters

BT is a huge company made up of seven different units – customer-facing and corporate. In GS there are a number of large functions going through huge transformation, which have a considerable role to play in our future success. This includes our  Sales teams, now organised into three vertical teams based on the type of customers they support:

  • Banking & Financial Services
  • Resources, Manufacturing & Logistics
  • Technology, Life Sciences & Business Services

We’re taking one global approach to sales, and the new vertical structure is a departure from our previous regional organisation. With teams spread across the globe, we need a really strong internal comms lead to help build collaboration across the teams, and share a consistent story with the whole sales community.

We need to celebrate the work of our sales teams, while making sure their communication needs tie back to our GS, BT and IC strategy. This isn’t about supporting the leaders of the three sales verticals to communicate their personal priorities but working with them to showcase their work to the wider sales team and all of GS, while making sure their teams are engaged and committed to BT’s vision, strategy, goals and priorities.

That’s where you come in. You’ll work closely with three members of the GS leadership team to offer strategic advice and communications activity for our sales people in line with our internal comms strategy. You’ll spot the stuff we need to share and know how to say ‘no’ to anything that doesn’t help improve understanding of the bigger picture and advocacy of our brand. You’ll be a dab hand at comms planning, working closely with the head of internal comms and senior internal comms manager for GS to create an annual IC plan for Sales, that ties back to GS and the broader IC plan.

You’ll be a passionate advocate of our BT brand, no matter which part of the business you sit in, making sure that any content you create for your audiences looks, sounds and feels like BT (in a good way). You’ll work closely with our comms teams in the corporate teams to work out what and when communications need to be adapted for your audience and you’ll constantly look for new ways to improve what we do, share insight and any new ideas you’ve come across.

In a nutshell, you’ll be a brilliant writer, advisor, planner, challenger, creative, ideas sponge.

Accountabilities

Here’s the role in a bit more detail. You’ll:

  • partner with the sales teams to gain support and buy-in for the IC strategy, demonstrating the benefits for all employees
  • manage the sharing of all BT-wide communications into the sales community
  • create an annual IC plan for the sales community that ties back to GS and BT’s broader IC plan, working closely with the head of internal comms and corporate affairs director to make sure it all stacks up
  • create and deliver any bespoke comms activity for the sales community - including any strategic projects or function initiatives - making sure they’re on brand and support our IC principles
  • build strong and respectful relationships with your stakeholders – including senior leadership - providing spot-on advice on comms best practice, industry trends and BT-wide channel strategies to improve their understanding of the bigger comms picture
  • share the best of sales with the rest of GS
  • proactively share any brilliant work from sales into the corporate IC team to share across BT
  • seek out feedback on IC activities and constantly look for new ways – internally and externally - to do things differently, in pursuit of making our IC team one of the best in the industry

Skills required for the job

  • Experienced comms expert
  • Top-notch strategic and planning abilities - able to manage multiple plans and adapt to changing priorities and timelines quickly and easily
  • Collaborative – evidence of working brilliantly with colleagues at all levels of the business
  • Excellent stakeholder management, at all levels, especially tricky ones (there might be a few…)
  • Ability to break down complicated, technical and corporate speak into interesting and engaging communications that showcase our commitment to treat employees like adults, that we like
  • Demonstrable understanding of BT and internal communications – we’re a specialist team so we need someone experienced and in the know about what this takes
  • Understanding of the challenges of communicating with a global audience
  • Strong understanding (or eagerness to build) of sales
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills – particularly for presentations and creation of plans and strategy.

Experience you would be expected to have

  • Strategy development
  • Planning
  • Stakeholder management at senior level
  • Content creation

We value different perspectives, skills and experiences. We’re creating an inclusive working culture where people from all backgrounds can succeed. That’s why we welcome applications from all parts of the community.
