Where communications expertise saves lives

About us

The work of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) makes a vital difference to hundreds of people every single day. We prevent the loss of life at sea and on the coast in the UK. People rely on our 24-hour emergency service 365-days a year, whilst our surveyors operate to ensure high standards of safety for all boat users around the globe.

Our vision is to be the best maritime safety organisation in the world – and we believe that comes from taking a fresh look at our organisation. We’re creating a cohort of new, senior managers from diverse backgrounds to challenge our culture, inspire our people and drive us forward. Together we’ll build a modern, agile, faster-paced organisation.

The opportunity

Working closely with the Chief Executive, this role matters because it maintains and enhances our reputation and promotes public safety. Taking a holistic view of our communications strategy, your broad-ranging brief will cover both reactive and proactive media engagement, as well as marketing and internal communications. You’ll work with a skilled team to address press, social media and insight-driven marketing needs, producing communications for many different audiences in different contexts, from the maritime community to the general public. Developing strong working relationships with everyone from the UK Department of Transport to the international shipping industry will be key to your success.

The person

The opportunity to deliver life-saving communications and report on major incidents at sea makes this a career-defining role for an experienced professional with leadership expertise. You’ll have a solid grounding in an area such as marketing, media engagement or digital, which could have been gained in either the public or the private sector. As we are looking to you to help us transform the way we work, a proven track-record of influencing, inspiring and motivating others is essential.  Flexible on-call working will be expected during major maritime incidents, and there will be some travel required.

Closing date: 2 June 2019.
