Tower Hamlets Council’s Communications and Marketing Service is seeking to appoint two Communication Officers on a one year fixed term contract on a full-time basis. 

The council is undergoing a major transformation, with the award winning Communications and Marketing Service at the heart of its new approach. 

We want a first class communicator who can put together packages for national and regional media and lead on delivering campaigns to change behaviour and raise awareness. Ultimately you will help to improve the lives of thousands of people.  You should already work in communications or you could be a seasoned local journalist wanting to make a change in your career.

Tower Hamlets has an amazing story to tell. We are building more homes than any other local authority; we are helping thousands of people into employment each year and our Ideas Stores, leisure centres and children’s centres welcome over 4m people a year.   

Our borough combines major economic centres including Canary Wharf and City Fringe, destinations such as the Tower of London and Brick Lane, and one the country’s most diverse and culturally rich populations. 

You will be expected to:

  • secure proactive national and regional media coverage;
  • advise, lead and contribute to our campaigns and publications;
  • ensure the effective use of insight to ensure our work is targeted to the right people using the most effective channels, and evaluated;
  • provide expert media and wider communications advice to colleagues;
  • monitor media coverage and provide timely updates to colleagues;
  • help manage our social media channels with excellent content; 
  • deliver public events and support consultations; and
  • help manage our out of hours media phone on a rota basis

You will be a communications professional who understands how to develop a story and sell it in to the media. You will have a good knowledge of media contacts, campaigns and strategic communications planning, with research and evaluation at its core.

You will also know how to get our messages across to our audiences so they can benefit from our services and those of our partners in order to improve their lives.

You will be expected to form excellent working relationships with relevant departments and have a can do attitude to help the communications team to become an award winning service.

You will have a good understanding and experience of proactive media work and campaigns, and measuring the results of your work. 

You will have good press contacts and understand how to generate a story that will be of interest to national and regional media.

You will be expected to man the out of hours phone on a rota basis.
