The PR Manager, working in to the Head of PR, is responsible for managing the reactive press office team and building stakeholder trust in TUI UK & Ireland’s brands and businesses, and supporting on the crafting and delivery of a reputational management strategy working with key internal teams within the business including Customer Care, Legal and Public Affairs.

The PR Manager plays a key role in the management of any issues and crises and leads on the development of any external reactive messaging including customer communications. A key challenge for this role is to minimise the impact of any negatives issues likely to affect the impact on public perception of the brands and/or business. When potentially negative issues strike, the PR Manager tries to ensure any damage to the brands is limited.

In addition the PR Manager is responsible for managing the strategic development and implementation of proactive activity to promote the Crystal Ski Holidays and TUI Lakes and Mountains brands.

This role is based in our fantastic and vibrant office in Luton and we are also able to offer a flexible approach to working where you will have the opportunity to work from elsewhere 2 days a week.

What you will be doing

As PR Manager you will be responsible for leading a team of three, plus the wider supporting PR team members, to ensure all media contact is responded to in an effective and efficient way while helping to protect the reputation of the TUI business and its brands. As a senior member of the team, you will ensure that the press office is managed to the highest standard, in order that external stakeholders view it as a reliable, useful and credible source of information.  

The world of travel is an ever changing and you will constantly reassess TUI UK & Ireland’s positioning on topical consumer and business issues, ensuring that all key management and spokespeople are clear on the company’s line so that you can advise and coach other key management and spokespeople for the business. 

Partnering with colleagues across the business is key; you will work across the business to ensure that internal and external announcements and messages are aligned and fit with the company values, and that where appropriate the latest messaging is shared with customer facing teams for onward communication.

You will work with the Head of PR to proactively anticipate and identify reputation matters as they arise and advise senior management on a suitable response. When required, you will deputise for the Head of PR to lead the response to issues and crises reporting to the UK&I board and TUI Group.  

The PR Manager is also responsible for devising in-house proactive PR activity and a complete press trip programme to promote Crystal Ski Holidays and TUI Lakes & Mountains, with a responsibility for the £90k budget and ensuring integration with the Crystal Ski Holidays and TUI Lakes & Mountains marketing and content teams.

Additional responsibility will include:

  • Managing relationships and providing brand counsel to senior stakeholders to ensure understanding of PR activity and results
  • Maintaining and developing excellent media and influencer relationships both inside and outside of travel
  • Monitor the external reputation of the brands and adapt style and respond to any issues accordingly
  • Leading the creation of statements, Q&As, social media and other communications to address incidents with the media
  • Responsibility for development and line management of a team – with a focus on increasing internal capabilities and ensuring all PR team members are confident in responding in an issue or crisis
  • Supporting with ensuring senior spokespeople are adequately trained on crisis response and media training

What we are looking for

  • Experience in either in-house or agency side
  • Experience of managing crisis communications and an ability to pre-empt and diffuse potentially difficult issues for the business
  • Experience of working in complex organisations and a proven track record in juggling a variety of business priorities with a separate media agenda.
  • Strategic thinking, and the ability to build creative PR plans from business strategy
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Experience in people management and development
  • Excellent presentation skills and gravitas in meetings to influence decisions
  • Ability to think on your feet and adapt response where necessary to accommodate changing business priorities / evolving geo-political landscape
  • Good networking skills, diplomacy, tact and an ability to react quickly
  • Credibility as an ambassador for the business and ability to influence external audiences in an appropriate manner
  • Credibility with senior management and ability to brief/challenge senior colleagues on key issues where necessary
  • Ability to weigh up the commercial impact when assessing issues surrounding a situation, in order to make balanced recommendations to the business
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain excellent relationships with the media
  • Ability to develop contacts and an understanding of relevant media types and the opportunities they provide.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
