Can you help us change perceptions of engineering?

As part of our busy Communications department, you will promote our rapidly expanding research and international programmes, proactively raising our profile and engaging key opinion formers through both traditional and digital media outreach. You will also build the profile of our new National Engineering Policy Centre, working with other UK engineering organisations to represent the views of over 450,000 engineers across the profession on complex and topical issues such as autonomous systems and clean energy.

As the UK’s national academy for engineering and technology, the Royal Academy of Engineering brings together the most talented and successful engineers – our Fellows – to advance and promote excellence in engineering for the benefit of society.

As Communications Manager, you will have a track record of placing exciting news stories in national media and have a great nose for news and a tenacious approach. You will build and maintain good links with media contacts and partner organisations, and will be encouraged to attend high-profile events, work with our Fellows and visit our researchers, giving you access to some of the UK’s most innovative thinkers and a real opportunity to impact on the Academy’s mission to bring engineering to the centre of society.

Adept at writing for a variety of purposes, from news releases and opinion editorial to website copy, your work will also involve drafting speeches and briefings key stakeholders, as well as updating our messaging and suite of marketing collateral. A creative communications practitioner, you will enjoy working collaboratively with a range of subject matter experts and other communications functions.

You will also be skilled in evaluating media campaigns and interpreting complex scientific and technical stories. A strong engineering or scientific background would be an advantage in this role, but your initiative, drive and determination to transform our media profile is the key requirement.
