Work at the Charity Commission and you’ll make a difference every day. To the 168,000 charities of all shapes and sizes that we regulate across England and Wales. To the trustees we partner with and advise. And to the people and causes that benefit from the £75 billion spent by charities each year. The Commission has set out an ambitious five-year strategy, being clear that we will be driven by our purpose to ensure that charity can thrive and inspire trust so that people can improve lives and strengthen society. Our purpose is bold, confident and so is our proud commitment to represent the public interest. It’s a huge responsibility – and one that gives every member of our workforce enormous influence and impact.

Our communications work is central to achieving our purpose. In this high profile role, reporting directly to the Director of Communications & Policy and working closely with the Chair, CEO and other senior leaders, the Head of External Relations will lead a team overseeing all the Charity Commission’s media, parliamentary and stakeholder engagement work. You will help us to use our voice more strongly to encourage the behaviour that people expect of charities, to inform public choice and to grow our dialogue with charities.

Key responsibilities

  • Overseeing the Commission’s media relations work, ensuring media coverage helps support regulatory outcomes and the achievement of our strategy, whilst building our reputation
  • Ensuring the Commission is visible and accountable to Parliament, and engages effectively with Ministers, Opposition spokespeople, Select Committees and individual MPs
  • Coordinating the Commission’s engagement with key stakeholders and ensuring regular contact at senior level to build understanding and productive relationships
  • Acting as a representative and advocate for the Commission with stakeholders, MPs and the media
  • Overseeing the Commission’s external narrative, ensuring it supports our organisational purpose, and ensuring high quality speechwriting support for the leadership team
  • Leading a highly effective team and working as part of the Commission’s wider leadership to achieve high impact outcomes in support of our strategy
