We are on the lookout for a passionate senior-level communications professional.
Following the rapid growth of the department from 500 to nearly 2,000 employees in less than 4 years, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport is looking for an exceptional Director of Communications to set the strategic direction of the function and provide leadership for a team of approximately 40 professionals.
The Communications team offers a full, integrated communications service to the department, covering media relations, PR and marketing campaigns, digital and social media. This naturally includes a major focus now on responding to the Covid crisis and work to support recovery across all our sectors.
DCMS communications involves some of the most interesting policies in government, with a wide and varied portfolio, a network of 45 public bodies and high-profile industry stakeholders. The range of work is extensive, and in this role you will set the strategic direction for how we communicate to all audiences, working with senior stakeholders and Ministers to structure and refine our communications objectives. You will set a narrative for the department that will convey both individual policy responsibilities and a coherent department identity.
The Director of Communications will be the strategic lead for all of DCMS’s external communications, and the professional adviser to Ministers, Special Advisers, Director Generals and Directors.
To do this, you will build strong professional relationships both across and beyond the organisation at the most senior levels. You will utilise your passion for our work to support our leaders to develop integrated communications strategies at an organisational level, with innovation and evaluation at their heart.
You will be the functional lead for the Communications profession within DCMS and will play an active role in championing and developing the profession within the department, working alongside your peers across government to support the strategic aims and ambitions of the Government Communications Service.
Some key responsibilities include:
- Providing senior counsel to the Secretary of State, Ministers and officials
- Leading a high-performing communications directorate
- Leading DCMS’s contribution to the wider reforms of Government Communication
- Relationship development with key influencers
- Overseeing the communications budget
