Communications Manager

Job Details

Can you help us raise the national and international profile of engineering and technology?

The Academy's Communication and Engagement department is currently recruiting for a Communications Manager.

The Royal Academy of Engineering is harnessing the power of engineering to build a sustainable society and an inclusive economy that works for everyone.

In collaboration with our Fellows and partners, we’re growing talent and developing skills for the future, driving innovation and building global partnerships, and influencing policy and engaging the public. Together we’re working to tackle the greatest challenges of our age.

As part of our busy Communications and Engagement department, you will promote our rapidly expanding enterprise and international programmes, proactively raising our profile with key opinion formers and the public through both traditional and digital media outreach. You will also build awareness of our new National Engineering Policy Centre, working with other UK engineering organisations to represent the views of over 450,000 engineers across the profession.

You will have excellent media contacts and a proven track record of placing exciting news stories in national media. Your work will also involve drafting speeches, briefings and letters for key stakeholders, as well as updating and fine-tuning our suite of marketing collateral. You will build and maintain good links with national print and broadcast media and leading trade bodies, and will be encouraged to attend high-profile events. You will work with our Fellows and programme awardees, giving you access to some of the most innovative thinkers and a real opportunity to impact on the Academy’s mission to build a sustainable society and an inclusive economy.

Experienced in press and media relations and adept at writing for a variety of purposes, from news releases to opinion editorial to website copy, you will be a creative communications practitioner with great news sense and a tenacious approach. You will also be skilled in evaluating media campaigns, interpreting complex scientific and technical stories and working collaboratively with a range of subject matter experts and other communications functions.

A strong engineering or scientific background would be an advantage in this role. However, your initiative, drive and determination to transform our media profile is the key requirement.

In return, we offer an unrivalled package of benefits including a non-contributory pension scheme, BUPA cash plan, private medical insurance, subsidised restaurant, regular social activities, health and wellbeing programmes and flexible working, as well as significant investment into your personal and professional development. Our offices are based in central London near St. James' Park. We have adapted our working practices in response to Covid-19, and all staff are currently working remotely.

If this sounds like you, we would love to hear from you.

Closing date: Midday on Friday, 21 May 2021.
