Senior Account Manager/Account Director

JOB DESCRIPTION: SAM / ACCOUNT DIRECTOR

The overall responsibility of the Account Director is to ensure that the work delivered on accounts is of the highest standard and that we become indispensable in the client’s eyes. The Account Director works into the senior team, supporting and advising on the strategic and creative delivery of each element of the account. They are responsible for the smooth delivery of campaigns whilst providing solid counsel to clients. They should keep the senior team updated on client and account developments and ensure that they are brought in when needed to support with strategy and creative. The Account Director is a role model to the wider team and should conduct themselves as such. An emblem of Unity, they need to demonstrate an interest and desire to deliver ground-breaking integrated work that changes the game. Flexibility, open-mindedness and collaboration (internally, with clients and partners) are vital skills that an Account Director must embody

Key skills required for the role:

Understanding the client 

  • Use knowledge of the client’s business to develop plans that link to their wider marketing and business objectives
  • Be sure that clients are satisfied with the service delivered by Unity – at all stages of each campaign
  • If there is any dissatisfaction, ensure it is handled swiftly and the relevant Director informed 

Communication

  • Show ability to lead senior client meetings, talking confidently and with authority in order to gain the respect and attention of the room
  • Be able to guide clients, manage expectations and have difficult conversations if necessary
  • Be able to say ‘no’ at times and negotiate deadlines when needed
  • Have a strong working relationship with all levels of the team, so that they look up to and see their Account Director as a trusted, confident and calm leader
  • Liaising with and updating Directors on account and personnel matters 

Campaign implementation

  • Ensure each campaign is implemented to deadline, and achieves the client objectives
  • Manage client expectations on campaign results and deadlines – pushing back/saying “no” and recommending alternatives where required
  • Advise the client on strategic and creative recommendations throughout, ensuring that the campaign is the best that it can be
  • Establish solid KPIs at the campaign’s start – understanding the objectives of the business, not just the comms objectives but what they as a business want and need to achieve
  • Work with the Director on the account to ensure Unity plans are consistent on all levels

Team management

  • Lead by example, encourage a positive, energetic, enthusiastic, hard working and fun team environment. At Unity we want everyone to work hard but we need and want people to enjoy it – promoting a fun and happy environment is important 
  • Routinely motivate the team, ensuring they receive recognition for great work and regularly reviewing their work so that they’re sure it’s on track
  • Ensure the team are clear of their personal objectives and that work being carried out is designed to help them meet those objectives
  • Identify training areas for members of your team and flag these to Directors
  • Adapt your management skills to get the best out of individuals for the agency – play to people’s strengths

Media understanding

  • Ensure the team has the skills, knowledge and motivation required to build a wide range of quality traditional, digital and social media contacts and that these are used these to gain consistently impressive coverage
  • Ensure the team embrace the Unity approach, not just thinking how things will work in traditional media, but thinking how will people engage in a wider sense 

Digital/ Social Media

  • Encourage and ensure the team are digital and social media literate 
  • Confidently talk about digital and social integration to clients and sell this to them
  • Work with Unity’s social team seamlessly integrate digital and social media into all campaigns

Strategic and tactical understanding 

  • Work with Directors to establish key insights to form strategic thoughts – develop these ideas and present them to clients
  • Put forward and develop different strategies and tactics that achieve client objectives whist helping the team and client understand these  
  • Coach staff in understanding the rationale for insight and strategy – ensuring they have exposure to this side of the business to help them develop
