The role

Joining the Oversight Board Administration is a chance to be part of an organization which is leading on some of the most prominent and challenging issues facing the tech industry and society.

The Content & Editorial Officer will drive development of written and digital content essential for communicating the work of the Oversight Board. You will report to the Content & Editorial Lead, based in London.

A passionate storyteller, you will have experience writing or producing social media content on complex societal or technology issues. You will produce engaging written content that can accurately present and explain our work to publics, policy-makers, researchers and other communities following the work of the Board, and work to engage and build relationships with key constituencies and opinion-makers on social media.

Key responsibilities

Responsibilities for this role will include, but are not limited to: 

  • Developing and executing a strategy for communicating the work of the Board across our social media channels, including working with vendors to create rich visual content that supports key communications priorities for the Board.
  • Ensuring the Board’s decisions are clear and consistent, copyediting and summarizing key findings.
  • Supporting creation of content including op-eds, blog posts and other updates, as well as the Board’s annual report.Assisting with other aspects of content and editorial support for the Administration, as required by the Content & Editorial Lead.

Although much of this work will be proactive, at times you will also help support fast-moving reactive communications needs for the Oversight Board, including crafting external messaging and content that will support our rapid response efforts.  

This role may be based in the Administration’s locations of London or Washington D.C.

Skills and Experience

Successful candidates are likely to have the following skills and experience:

  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills, with proven experience of translating complex issues into punchy and engaging content for diverse audiences.
  • Creative and confident user of social media, with professional experience of creating content, managing an organization’s social media platforms, and growing and engaging audiences..
  • Proficiency with Adobe Suite, particularly Photoshop, or experience working with creation of graphic content preferred but not essential.
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced organization, managing competing projects, priorities and internal stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Experience communicating on challenging issues relating to technology and society.
  • A deep understanding and enthusiasm for the role of the Oversight Board in the evolving technology and content moderation landscape.

The Oversight Board is a new body that makes binding and independent decisions about the most challenging content issues on Facebook and Instagram. The first members of the Board were announced in May 2020 and include Helle Thorning-Schmidt, former Prime Minister of Denmark, Tawakkol Karman, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Michael McConnell, Director of Stanford’s Constitutional Law Center, and many other diverse leaders and thinkers from around the world. The Board issued its first decisions in January 2021.
