Hello! Material Focus is an independent, not-for-profit start-up looking for a PR manager to join our determined and passionate team who put sustainability at the heart of everything we do. We have launched the Recycle Your Electricals campaign to stop people throwing away their small unwanted electricals - and get more people reusing and recycling them.  We are looking for someone who has a personal interest in sustainability, preferably experience too. 

The PR Manager will lead the development of PR and social media across all our channels as part of a small, newly formed and growing team. 

Job Description

As the PR Manager you will be responsible for developing and implementing the PR and social media strategy for our corporate brand, Material Focus and our consumer facing campaign, Recycle your Electricals. You will play a key role in raising awareness of the campaign and the actions UK householders can take to recycle their electricals.   

To do this you will need to ensure we achieve effective and engaging media coverage in a range of titles - with a strong focus on consumer titles for the campaign, and environmental sections of the media for Material Focus. As the PR Manager you will draft or oversee the creation of media releases and content relating to the campaigns across all our media channels. You will enjoy and excel at forging relationships with journalists and key influencers and will manage the response to ‘crisis’ situations, with support from the PR and external relations lead. 

Responsibilities

  • Implement the PR and social media plan on time and budget to meet our goals.
  • Develop and execute media relations and social media content for PR campaigns seeking high-level placements in print, broadcast and online media.
  • Research, plan and deliver a detailed schedule of activity for each PR and social media campaign across all channels (including website). Collaborate with the Campaign Manager to develop the plan ensuring clear goals to measure performance of different content types, themes and channels.
  • Create PR content for press releases and social media.  Collaborate with the Campaign Manager to ensure the delivery of, byline articles and keynote presentations, including case studies, website and social media  to support the delivery of the PR and social media campaign.  Ensure it is proof-read, tonally on-brand, and optimised for the variety of audiences, and search engines.
  • Leverage existing media relationships and cultivate new contacts within the media.
  • Manage media inquiries and interview requests.
  • Monitor, analyse and communicate PR and social media results on a quarterly basis and for each PR campaign.
  • Evaluate opportunities for in-kind partnerships to support PR and social media campaigns.
  • Identify who we should work with including thought leaders, celebrities and influencers to build awareness.
  • Maintain a keen understanding of external trends and make appropriate recommendations regarding the communication strategy surrounding them.
  • Be the day to day contact with our agencies to ensure the effective implementation of our PR campaigns.
  • Develop and execute events that support our corporate objectives.
  • Manage the day to day PR budget. 

Key skills

  • Proven track record designing and executing successful PR and multi-channel social media campaigns, at both a local and national level.
  • Strong relationships with both local and national and trade media outlets.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop relationships with the media.
  • Experience acting as a company spokesperson; comfortable and skilled in both broadcast and print media interviews.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, the ability to write compelling copy for social media, blogs, website and media releases, and able to present and explain detailed information clearly
  • Solid experience with social media including blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and how they can be integrated into PR campaigns.
  • Event planning experience.
  • BA/MA degree. Qualifications Education to degree level is required. BA/ MA degree in marketing, advertising or a PR postgraduate qualification is desirable.  
  • Relevant experience Two to three years’ experience in public relations and social media either in-house or in an agency, is a minimum. A track record of developing and delivering communication plans is key, alongside experience of working closely with journalists and responding to media requests.  
  • FTC - Fixed Term Contract until 31 December 2024. The role will be based remotely during COVID and subsequently likely to be based in Victoria, London.
