Science Communications and Media Officer

Location: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Didcot, Oxfordshire
We have a vacancy for a Science Communications Officer in our Science and Technology Facilities Council team, to source and write content from the world's most exciting research and innovation activities. Your storytelling skills will help us share the excitement and social impact of our world-leading science, engineering and technology to a range of audiences through digital and traditional channels. Your compelling content and creative ideas will generate increased public and stakeholder interest in our research programmes.
You will be part of a small team working closely with other communications colleagues and researchers across STFC and the wider UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) community to source, research, write and edit, innovative content and will assist in developing STFC's presence within the print and broadcast media. You will contribute to a range of corporate communications and PR activities and events across the campus. You will have good written and verbal communications skills, as well as strong journalistic instincts and a grasp of how to structure a narrative. You will be comfortable with fast turnarounds and juggling multiple jobs simultaneously.
An important aspect of the role will be to liaise with academic and expert staff to ensure opportunities are sourced to showcase our research facilities in press, journals, magazines, and broadcast media, as well as across our online platforms.
Essential:
- Excellent writing and visual presentation skills
- Broadcast/print journalism/press office experience
- Demonstrated experience in sourcing and producing news, features and presentations to tight deadlines
- Significant experience of breaking down complex subjects/topics into engaging content
- Experience of managing communications projects
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience in journalism or a related subject.
