The General Medical Council (GMC) regulates UK doctors and works to improve medical education and practice nationwide. We’re currently looking for a talented Senior Media Relations Officer to help safeguard and promote the work and reputation of the GMC in the media. This role presents a fantastic opportunity to work in a supportive and positive service that makes a difference to doctors and patients across the UK.
Joining our small and collegiate team in either Manchester or London, you'll be happy to work collaboratively on a variety of tasks. Monitoring policy changes will be an important part of your day-to-day work, alongside responding to media enquiries professionally and efficiently, ensuring all responses are appropriate. Within the role, you will also be expected to align messaging with regional GMC representatives, our strategic relationship teams and senior internal managers. This is a varied role and you will have the opportunity to work on short and longer-term projects. In all aspects of the job, emphasis is placed on an open and supportive team culture.
To succeed in this role, you must demonstrate excellent communication skills and be confident liaising with individuals at varying levels of seniority, from a range of organisations. You will also be a strong and experienced writer, comfortable producing content for a variety of publications including in-house and external audiences. It is essential that you regularly write press releases in your current role, possibly for a local authority, trust or council and have solid experience in media relations. Importantly, you'll be keen to constantly learn and strive to grow as a key member of a highly-skilled team.
You may currently be working in a role with a regional or local emphasis but this is a great opportunity to work on a national scale. You will have the rare opportunity to work directly with prominent national newspapers and major broadcasters including the BBC. Knowledge of the health system would be advantageous but is not essential.
Join our team and you’ll be a valuable member of a strong and stable organisation that is genuinely committed to its people. You'll have the opportunity to work in a complex environment and positively influence many aspects of the GMC, developing your career in the process.
Our friendly workplace is built around professional wellbeing and, even pre-pandemic, we were advocates of flexible working. Within this post, you'll enjoy a healthy balance of time at our large, modern central-Manchester site in Hardman Square or London office, alongside flexibility to work from home.
The GMC values diversity and has made a public commitment to processes and procedures that are fair, objective, transparent and free from discrimination. We are working hard to increase staff diversity and those we work with, wherever possible. Applicants from all backgrounds are therefore encouraged to apply.
If you are interested in applying for this role, please submit a covering letter and CV which demonstrates your reason for applying and how you meet the technical knowledge and communications skills listed on the job description.
