We are looking for a communications and marketing professional with a track record in creating targeted, engaging and eye-catching campaigns and communications that encourage people to make small changes to make a big difference.

The ideal candidate will be great at building relationships with other teams across the council and external organisations and community groups and have a flair for encouraging people to take action.

They will contribute towards research and consultation to understand key motivators and barriers to taking action over climate change. Based on this research and using behaviour change good practice, they will develop strategic sustained and evaluated programmes to prompt individuals, businesses and communities to take action around climate change objectives.

Using their communications expertise, working in the council’s Communications and Marketing team but closely with the climate change team and taskforce across the council, they will deliver sustained and effective behaviour change campaigns and communications plans, programmes and activities to contribute to climate change goals.

They will create and deliver specific communications tools to encourage involvement in actions under the strategy, including e-newsletters, meetings, events and other specific engagement activities, alongside a proactive and reactive media relations and social media campaigns and interaction around climate change. Organising and commissioning photography and video related to climate emergency initiatives for use across a range of media and briefing designers to create eye-catching communications materials will also form part of their plans.

Effective internal communications will also be part of their toolkit, to engage the council’s workforce in support of the climate change and air quality strategy.

This is a fixed term two year contract and sits in the Communications and Marketing team. The post is for 37 hours per week full time from Monday to Friday, with some evening and weekend work. The post holder would be working a percentage of time from home from home.

The successful candidate will need:

  • a relevant degree level qualification in a behaviour change, marketing or communications discipline, or equivalent experience
  • a good knowledge of, and interest in, climate change issues
  • a track record in community engagement and stakeholder management
  • experience of running campaigns and working reactively and proactively with social media and the media
  • expertise in developing integrated programmes and campaigns, particularly driving behaviour change, across a range of communications disciplines, including social media and e-communications and producing internal and external publications and promotional material
  • appropriate experience in a similar role, working in local government or public sector communications and working in a busy communications environment.
