Our purpose

We are the independent statutory body established to investigate miscarriages of justice in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Our business is reviewing and investigating potential miscarriages of justice. We are a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Ministry of Justice with a budget for the current year of just over £7.5M. We have referred over 750 cases to the appellate courts and receive over circa 1400 cases a year. The majority of those applications are in relation to the most serious crimes such as murder, rape, terrorism, and drugs.

About the role

This role is about expanding our reach. We have carried out a great deal of work to ensure that we are accessible to those who may need our services and now want to take that to the next level and ensure that we are reaching out to all potential applicants who may have suffered a miscarriage of justice

It's also about strategy and innovation, you will lead the development and delivery of communications and engagement strategies which support the corporate aims.

This is not a job about simply issuing press releases or tweeting. It's much bigger than that. It's about dynamic leadership and first-rate communications. As a key member of the senior team you will lead the external affairs team providing incisive, creative and effective communications to internal and external audiences. It's about public affairs and about stakeholder engagement; through a strategic approach you will build relationships, both inside and outside of the Commission, negotiating with and influencing others to achieve desired outcomes.  Vitally, it’s about helping us to find and engage with victims of potential miscarriages of justice.

You will be highly collaborative; you will work closely with the senior team, the Board, Commissioners and staff so that they get the support and advice they need to carry out their functions effectively. You will play a key role in supporting collaboration and innovation across the Commission and media. As we are a small organisation you will need to balance the strategic with rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in. This means you will be expected to be across the work we do in terms of understanding how it operates as well as understanding the interdependencies.

About you

You will be able to demonstrate substantial experience related to the delivery of services in communications and public affairs and whilst you may not have experience of the criminal justice system you will have the ability to collaborate across the criminal justice system to deliver the best results for us and for our applicants whilst upholding our independence at all times.

You will also have experience of leading and developing teams Given the move of CCRC to remote working, you will be comfortable managing your team remotely. You will also have a highly developed ability to build strong working relationships.

Please note that this role requires clearance to CTC (Counter Terrorist Check) level.

Please apply before 11.55pm on Tuesday 18th January 2022
