Company

The world's local bank
HSBC is one of the largest and most trusted banking and financial services organisations in the world. With a international network extending to 9,500 offices in 85 countries and territories, we combine in-depth local knowledge with unmatched global reach to provide a comprehensive range of services to millions of customers.

HSBC in the UK
Our retail banking network comprises over 1,500 branches across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, but our UK offering extends to the full range of our commercial, corporate, premier and private banking services - as well as to subsidiary brands like First Direct, M&S Money and HFC Bank. The UK is also home to our global headquarters, 8 Canada Square. Located in the heart of Canary Wharf, 8CS is one of the country's tallest buildings, spanning 42 floors and employing more than 8,000 people across hundreds of different roles.

Our history
We are also one of the oldest banking groups in the world. Our origins date back to 1865, when the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation was first established, and many of our principal companies opened for business more than a century ago. While having such a rich and varied heritage is in itself an immense source of pride, it is also directly relevant to the way we do business today.

Sustainable success
As a bank, we are focused on achieving long-term profit growth, not short-term success. This means building stable, enduring relationships with our customers and making a lasting, positive contribution to the environment and the communities in which we operate.

As a major employer, lender and investor, we recognise that we are in a position to make an important contribution to environmental and social sustainability, not only by managing the impact of our business activities, but also through our lending and investments.

For instance, in addition to being the first major bank to become carbon neutral, we have also adopted the Equator Principles, a set of voluntary guidelines developed to help organisations like ours address the environmental and social issues that arise from financing projects.
