The Home Office mission is fundamentally important: to keep Britain’s streets safe and its borders secure. Each and every member of Home Office staff plays a part in making that happen. With a budget of £13.6bn and a staffing profile of over 35,000, we lead on immigration and passports, drugs policy, crime policy, counter-extremism and counter-terrorism and work to ensure visible, responsive and accountable policing in the UK. These issues are at the heart of the Government’s agenda which makes this one of the most exciting and challenging roles in the communications discipline in Government.
This is the most senior Communications leadership role in the Home Office, supporting the Home Secretary to achieve her goals through communication and acting to build the Home Office’s reputation. Through regular engagement with Minsters, you will help them to spot and mitigate risks, change attitudes and change behaviours. Reporting to the Second Permanent Secretary and overseeing a team of c.120 staff with a budget of £10 million you will be responsible for setting the strategic direction in this area across the Department.

You will be a communications professional with an outstanding track record of providing strong and visible, collaborative and coalition-building leadership with a proven ability to develop a motivated, engaged, diverse, inclusive and high performing workforce. A thought leader and source of expertise and innovation, you will have highly developed interpersonal and influencing skills, establishing credibility with ease across a diverse spectrum of stakeholders. Political acumen coupled with a deftness in reaching sound judgements on a range of strategic and reputational issues is critical as is the resilience to work in a high profile, heavily scrutinised and very visible leadership role.
