Communications Manager

The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) purpose is to serve the public interest by setting high standards of corporate governance, reporting and audit and holding to account those responsible for delivering them. We are the UK Competent Authority for audit. We also set the UK Corporate Governance and Stewardship Codes as well as UK standards for accounting, auditing and actuarial work, and monitor and take action to promote the quality of corporate reporting and operate independent enforcement arrangements for accountants and actuaries. In Sir John Kingman's Independent Review of the Financial Reporting Council (the “Kingman Review”), he recommended that the Financial Reporting Council (the “FRC”) evolve into a new regulator called the Audit, Reporting and Governance Authority (“ARGA”) The Financial Reporting Council is gaining momentum towards these additional responsibilities and authority and has seen a large growth in resources, output, and responsibilities over the last few years.

To support this momentum and ensure the FRC communicates and engages effectively with all our stakeholder universe as we transition to becoming ARGA, the Stakeholder Engagement and Corporate Affairs function was launched in 2020 building on the existing communications and stakeholder engagement platform to add new roles in Public Affairs and Marketing and Digital communications.

This role is a key one in the Communications team and will lead the Internal Communications function which has grown significantly in the last 18 months or so given the challenges of hybrid working as well as the rapid growth of the organisation. This role also is partners with key functions across the business to support and deliver key publications and activity to demonstrate the FRC’s influence and importance. The role will create ideas and opportunities for platforms and channels to deliver and amplify all the FRC’s key messages and output.

This is a Level 3 role at the FRC and reports to the Director of Stakeholder Engagement and Corporate Affairs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Internal Communications function, building on the existing platform to further deliver an effective and inclusive communication strategy and plan for the Board, Exco and the whole organisation.
  • Become a communications business partner for several key functions who engage with key stakeholders externally via a number of channels include traditional and digital media
  • Create a clear strategy and plan to support the delivery of several key publications and events, building strong relationships with subject matter experts and translating sometimes highly technical material into layperson’s language
  • Provide strategic support to the Head of the SE&CA function as well as ad hoc support and cover for other Communications team members
  • Develop excellent media relationships with key mainstream and trade media
  • Horizon scan for emerging trends or themes in the stakeholder universe that are relevant for the FRC’s work and remit

Skills required

  • A number of years experience in a media relations or related communications role
  • Internal communications experience preferred
  • Strong media relations with key titles
  • Expert writing skills including social media content production
  • Strong knowledge of UK corporate landscape including general regulatory frameworks and
  • Experience in change management communications desirable
  • Strong PowerPoint and excel skills as well experience in podcasts and webinar production and editing
  • Experience in multi-stakeholder management and great interpersonal skills

The role is based in our Central London Office. The post holder should be able to work flexibly to support the team’s activities and provide cover within the FRC as necessary. From 6 September FRC will be operating a hybrid working arrangement with its workforce. This is four-day fortnight in the office and any arrangement will be agreed between the employee and the line manager.
