The Roles

2022 is a bold year for Birmingham, the start of a golden decade for the city and we are looking for two new people to join us as we seize the opportunities ahead.

The newly created roles of Head of Communications and Head of Press will join a busy team already promoting and enhancing the reputation of the city. In the year we host the Commonwealth Games we have a bold plan to ensure that with the eyes of the world on us as we use every opportunity to show just how amazing the city is. These two new roles will be vital in ensuring that plan delivers.

Bold, the definition of which is a willingness to take risks; confident and courageous. That is what we need from whoever comes in to work with us during one of the most exciting times for Birmingham. The social and economic impact of Covid19 on Birmingham means that you will be joining the council at a critical, but also exciting time, and one of re-charge and renewal. You will be starting as we host the Commonwealth Games giving Birmingham and our chance to shine on a global stage, and you will be key to creating that sparkle.

We want you to use your talents and experience to guide us as we use every opportunity to promote the city, engage with our citizens and collaborate with our staff. You will work closely with the Corporate Leadership Team (CLT) to successfully implement the Be Bold Be Birmingham communications strategy and improve the reputation of the organisation.

These new roles will report to the Assistant Director for Communications. They will be closely linked to the Director of Strategy, Equality & Partnerships and vital in providing trusted guidance and advice to the Chief Executive and Cabinet Members.

You will identify opportunities to help share the city and the council’s story though social and traditional media. Taking advantage of this one-off chance to change the reputation Birmingham, you will be someone with good connections, a strong track record in delivering engaging content and used to working in a fast paced and dynamic environment. You will provide operational grip: ensuring opportunities are successfully taken, and plans are successfully delivered with impact.

We are relaxed in terms of your professional background and equally keen to appeal to a diverse and broad range of candidates from across sectors, so your experience may have been gained in the commercial or public sectors, and possibly across the two.
