GambleAware is the leading commissioner of prevention and treatment services for gambling harms in Great Britain. We are an independent charity guided by a Board of trustees, the majority of whom work in the health sector.

The Media Officer is responsible for contributing towards the overall aim of promoting the work of GambleAware to its target audiences, including the general public, the media, health professionals and government. Within this role, you will be integral to the communications team in the delivery of specific public relations campaigns related to GambleAware’s programmes / projects, marketing activities, social media activity and brand awareness. Key accountabilities:

  1. The post holder will be an organised, creative individual who is a self-starter with first-rate written and verbal communication skills.
  2. You will need to be able to deal with a wide range of people at all levels, have a flexible approach to your work and work well in a team.
  3. An excellent news sense is essential and the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines. You will be able to unpack and understand complex research findings and explain them clearly.
  4. You will be adept at drafting high quality content, which will make an impact across a range of communications channels, including our social media channels, for diverse audiences.
  5. A strong understanding of social media is needed and will need to be reflected across all GambleAware’s social channels.
  6. Capable of taking a strategic approach to provide expert communications advice, you will also have a strong news sense – identifying and developing proactive communications, particularly digital. Strong influencing and negotiating skills are essential, enabling you to deal effectively and persuasively with stakeholders, as well as the media.
  7. Showing an interest in your colleagues’ work, you will also be able to deal with a wide range of people at all levels, have a flexible approach to their work and be a good team player.
  8. The post holder will develop and maintain mutually beneficial working relationships both internally within GambleAware and externally with stakeholders and the media:
  • Internal: Close liaison with experts across the organisation, including those in the research and prevention teams, as well as colleagues within the communications team.
  • External: Close liaison with the media and many stakeholder groups including other government departments, the NHS, local authorities, charities, public health bodies and academics.
