This is a really exciting opportunity for a highly skilled comms professional to play a leading role in shaping the work of the London Assembly.

The 25 Members of the London Assembly hold the Mayor to account, publicly examining policies and programmes on behalf of Londoners through committee meetings, plenary sessions, and investigations.

Balancing both strategic comms, news and digital, the Head of Communications has a critical role to play in promoting the work and role of the Assembly, building its impact and reach, and ensuring the Assembly’s scrutiny work is reflective of the needs and concerns of Londoners.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Secretariat, the post holder will: 

  • lead the London Assembly communications team;
  • develop and deliver a strategic communications strategy for the London Assembly, reflecting its 22/23 work programme;
  • work directly with Members of the London Assembly to provide support and guidance on comms and media issues;
  • support the Executive Director of Secretariat and Assistant Director, Scrutiny in planning and delivering the London Assembly Secretriat’s work programme;
  • play a leading role in transforming the presentation of the London Assembly’s work, with a particular emphasis on digital communication and putting diversity at the heart of the Assembly’s work;
  • be an active member of the corporate leadership of the Secretariat and as a member of the Directorate Management team. 

You will:

  • have a proven track record of developing and delivering a broad range of external communications strategies, initiatives and techniques. 

  • demonstratae proven impact in supporting organisations to shape and influence policy formulation by improving their profile and credibility. 

  • have knowledge and understanding of the media and experience of using different communication approaches, including digital and social media. 

  • have an exceptional ability build relationships and influence senior stakeholders across a complex stakeholder environment, and, ideally, experience of working with or too those in political office.

This role will be based at City Hall, in the Royal Docks (Kamal Chunchie Way, London, E16 1ZE). GLA staff are hybrid working up to 3 days a week in our offices and remotely depending on their role. As part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.

This job is ‘politically restricted’ under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.
