We have a great opportunity for a Senior Government and Parliamentary Affairs Officer to coordinate the GMC’s public affairs activities to improve the knowledge of our organisation with politicians and UK government officials.

The General Medical Council helps to protect patients and improve medical education and practice in the UK by setting standards for students and doctors. We support them in achieving (and exceeding) those standards, and take action when they are not met.

The GMC values diversity and has made a public commitment to processes and procedures that are fair, objective, transparent and free from discrimination. We are working hard to increase staff diversity and those we work with, wherever possible. Applicants from all backgrounds are therefore encouraged to apply.

You’ll play a key role in ensuring effective, joined up working across the organisation in response to political, policy, strategy and stakeholder developments which impact on the GMC’s role, responsibilities, performance and reputation.

We’re looking for someone with a successful and strong track record of supporting engagement with parliamentarians and officials in Whitehall Government departments.

Along with a passion for influencing, you’ll also need excellent communication skills to be able to write effective briefing documents.  If you are that personal and articulate individual, keen to make a lasting impact on healthcare, we’d like to hear from you.

Application process

If you are interested in applying for this role, please submit a CV and a cover letter of no more than 2 pages which demonstrates your reason for applying and a summary of how you can meet the key skills listed in the job description.

Please ensure you have anonymised your CV and covering letter before submitting your application. Please refer to the CV application form guidance.

Working arrangements

This is a hybrid role between home working and office working, you'll work a minimum of 2 days a week in the office. There might be additional office attendance where necessary for example team meetings. You can be based in any of our offices in Manchester (head office), London, Belfast, Cardiff or Edinburgh.

The GMC is happy to support a range of flexible working options. Flexible working requests will be considered in line with the policy.
