Where can you reach millions all over the world?

The Met’s comms team is arguably one of the busiest in the UK. They deliver comms that keep people safe and thousands of staff informed and tell fascinating stories through our digital channels and via local, national and media organisations. The team reacts fast and well, as you’d expect in one of the fastest-moving press offices in Europe.

Whether it’s breaking news about a murder investigation or taking the first call about a terrorism incident that’s unfolding as you speak, you’ll need to be prepared for anything. You’ll also support police officers as they give media interviews, handle high profile court cases, and create and implement innovative media strategies to help deliver against the Met’s priorities. 

You’ll own the development and distribution of content that tells the story of what the Met is doing to keep communities safe, how they can protect themselves and how we’re fighting crime. This will include the planning, implementation and evaluation of clear, timely and two-way communication through print, digital and face-to-face channels.

You will be part of a supportive team working and dealing closely with senior officers from across the organisation, alongside talented colleagues from across the Directorate of Media and Communication’s news, internal and campaigns teams.

So what do you need to bring us? Start with combining relevant experience in a communications team with a media focus, with a background of working in or for a large organisation with a significant external profile. You’ll also need an excellent understanding of different news media — owned and not owned — plus strong writing skills and the ability to tailor style and format to different audiences and platforms.

Lastly, you’ll be adept at planning, implementing and evaluating communications projects or campaigns, which deliver effective outcomes in support of organisational objectives.

This role is suitable for part-time working and job shares. We have a blended working approach, so while you’ll be based at New Scotland Yard, you’ll also be expected to regularly deploy across London as you create content and facilitate communication activity. You’ll have the chance to work from home some of the time too. A full role profile is available on request.
