Head of Engagement

Package includes competitive salary based on experience and attractive benefits

Unite the Union is recruiting a strategic communications and campaigns specialist, with experience of running a multi-disciplinary media team in a large and complex organisation, to fulfil the role of Head of Engagement.

Unite is the UK’s largest trade union, with a membership of over 1.2 million across a vast and diverse range of sectors including construction, manufacturing, transport, logistics, and healthcare.

The focus of the role is: to support the General Secretary in leading on all elements of the development, oversight and effective delivery of comprehensive strategies for external and internal engagement and communications; to lead, build and develop teams of staff working across different aspects of engagement to a high level; and to ensure that necessary systems and processes are in place to plan, manage and monitor engagement across the union. Experience of working in a private sector environment will be a significant advantage.

Reporting to our General Secretary, the role is based in our Central London offices, with travel when required. Given the 24/7 nature of the news cycle, applicants will be expected to be available outside normal working hours, and to work extended hours when necessary.

You will have relevant and direct experience at the most senior level including a successful record managing teams in integrated communications and media relations.

We are also looking for experience of working with senior internal and external stakeholders to influence decision making at the highest levels, as well as significant expertise in crisis/reputation management gained in a large and complex organisation.

We require a demonstrable track record of successful delivery of strategic communications campaigns and effective messaging across all media platforms, alongside experience working with traditional media, PR, marketing, social media and digital communications.

For a full copy of the job description please email [email protected] with the reference ‘Head of Engagement’. Applications consisting of a CV and covering letter articulating your suitability for the role should be sent to the same address no later than 1700 on Friday 24 February. Applications are encouraged from people who are under-represented in the union. We actively encourage women, Black and Asian Ethnic minority, disabled and LGBT+ people to apply.
