The UK’s largest trade union – Unite the Union – is recruiting a strategic communications and campaigns specialist to fulfil a new role within the organisation as Deputy Head of Engagement.

Reporting to our Head of Engagement, the role is based in our central London offices, with travel when required. Given the 24/7 nature of the news cycle, applicants will be expected to be available outside normal working hours, and to work extended hours when necessary.

At a time when the fight to secure jobs, fair pay and conditions for working people has never been higher on the political agenda, Unite the Union is looking for a talented communications specialist, with experience of working at a senior level in a multi-disciplinary media team in a large and complex organisation. Experience of working in a private sector environment will be an advantage.

The focus of the role is: to support the Head of Engagement with the development, oversight and effective delivery of comprehensive strategies for external and internal engagement; to provide expert advice on systems and processes used to plan, manage and monitor engagement across the union with a particular focus on digital platforms and metrics; to create high quality content that reflects the strategy and messaging of the General Secretary.

We are looking for candidates with a successful record working in integrated communications and media relations, experience of working with senior internal and external stakeholders to influence decision making, and significant expertise driving and measuring effective communications across digital platforms. We will require evidence of a track record of successful delivery of strategic communications campaigns and effective messaging across various media platforms.

You will be highly adept at honing messaging with excellent writing skills adapted to suit different outputs, while showing in-depth knowledge of digital and social media including the use of relevant metrics and data to assess effectiveness. You will have experience working with traditional media, PR, marketing, social media and digital communication. You will have the ability to manage a broad work portfolio, driving progress, managing risks and monitoring delivery, and, as such, will be highly organised, equipped with an attention to detail and a commitment to getting things done. You must be able to understand and work effectively within the wider political, social, and economic context, be a strategic and creative thinker, who has a good understanding of the media landscape in the UK. We also require strong levels of professionalism and integrity.
